Jasmin de Wolf is a Melbourne/Naarm based artist exploring perception, memory and experience through non-linear narratives, gesture and abstraction.
Working across painting, drawing and mixed media, Jasmin translates observations of the natural and imagined world, cause and effect, light and movement into an evolving abstract language and energetic compositions.
Her works develop through accumulation and interruption. Charcoal, pastel, spray paint, acrylic, oil stick and collage are layered, erased and reworked, with each gesture responding to what has come before. The process is intuitive but attentive, allowing chance and intention to exist alongside one another.
With a background in multimedia and the moving image, Jasmin brings an interest in movement, sequence and the expressive potential of the mark to her studio practice. Books, photography, poetry, music and everyday observations enter the work as fragments of stories and lingering traces that contribute to the atmosphere and visual memory of a piece.
Informed by an early awareness of how environments shape identity, belonging and the way we see one another, her practice is concerned with the act of paying attention, what we notice, what stays with us and how experience can be recast through the process of making, disrupting and reconnecting.
Jasmin acknowledges the Wurundjeri and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on she lives and works and pays her respects to Elders past and present.
